Painter

My work is essentially a meditation on nature.  As an urban dweller, I relish the sight of a sunlit branch, or of birds soaring overhead.  I collect tiny seed pods and observe them unfolding over time.  These natural phenomena have become the subjects of my paintings.

I am currently working on a series exploring the lives of birds.  Their movements weaving in and out of the landscape capture my attention.  I admire how birds are connected to one another, yet free in flight.

Small gestures such as a sideways glance, or the beckoning of a parent carry with them such grace and tenderness.  I am moved to depict these small moments through painting.  The way in which the image is painted conveys movement, and furthermore becomes central to the meaning of the painting.  I allow the unique properties of the material- transparency, thin washes of color, drips and loose marks- to inform the image.  Seeking to find a balance between abstraction and realism, I blur the boundaries between the two.  I want to depict both what I see and what I feel, coalescing in a single moment.
